• The oldest man participating, Bernard Merrick, 62, won the singles championship in the open tennis tournament sponsored over the past several weeks by the Kent-Queen Anne’s Chapter of the Washington College Alumni Association.
Merrick defeated Ed Athey, Washington College athletic director and a dozen years his junior, 6-3 and 11-9, after parading through a field of 15.

• Though activities in Kent and Queen Anne’s counties are counting in part on federal legislative help to stop a controversial rubblefill near Millington, Washington insiders say help is unlikely to come any time soon.
• As a tempest tagged “Danny” has already shown us this summer, even the northern part of the Bay is not immune from one of nature’s most destructive forces. William Gray, a Colorado University professor of atmospheric science known as a highly accurate forecaster, says the balance of the season is going to be tough, with plenty of hurricanes still to come. And though he stops short of foretelling where storms will strike, Gray says at least seven in all will have hit the mainland before the season is over — three with severe winds over 111 miles per hour. Those storms would be half again as strong as Danny, who mauled the Gulf Coast over a month ago.
• Chestertown High School Class of 1957 held its 40-year reunion June 28 in Chester River Yacht & Country Club. Every member of the class was located.
• What began as a pitcher’s duel through five complete innings evolved into a slugfest as the Baysiders erupted for 11 runs in their last two at bats to shut out the Rock Hall Chargers, 11-0, here August 4 for the modified-pitch championship of the Kent County Women’s Softball League.

Sho’men Aquatics age group swimmers bolstered by a silver medal-winning effort from the 11- and 12-year-old girls in the 200 freestyle relay to open the afternoon, captured their second Delmarva Swim League team championship August 2 here at Lake Forest High School.
