James Caan, whose remarkable performances in The Godfather, Elf and Misery made him a screen icon, has had his cause of death revealed by the Los Angeles County Coroner.
The 82-year-old Caan died earlier this month of a heart attack and coronary artery disease, according to the county report.
His family announced his death earlier in July on the actor’s official Twitter account.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the tweet reads. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
After a decade in the business, Caan shot to fame in the early 1970s with back-to-back signature roles. He earned an Emmy nom as the real-life cancer-stricken Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo in ABC’s Brian’s Song, alongside Billy Dee Williams as fellow Bears running back Gale Sayers. The heart-rending tale of the hard-forged friendship among the NFL’s first interracial roommates was the most-watched TV movie ever at that point, with a 32.9 rating/48 share and went on to win five Emmys including Outstanding Single Program – Drama or Comedy.
In a 2011 interview with the Television Academy Foundation (watch it here), Emmy-winning Brian’s Song screenwriter William Blinn said: “Jimmy’s Jimmy. He always had a cockiness, a confidence. Very competitive. Edgy, in the best sense of the word. But he’s a guy with all the pluses and minuses you can have.”
Caan followed that success with his best-known role: the hotheaded, violent and vengeful Sonny Corleone, eldest son of Don Corleone (Marlon Brando), in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. The film based on Mario Puzo’s bestseller won the Best Picture Oscar and is considered among the greatest movies of all time. Caan’s onscreen death amid a hail of bullets also is considered among cinema’s best.

James Caan, star of “The Godfather” “Elf” and “Misery,” died earlier this month due to heart problems.
According to the actor’s death certificate obtained by TMZ, Caan died from a heart attack and coronary artery disease. He was 82 years old.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” read a statement posted to Caan’s Twitter announcing his death.
“The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
The statement ended with the actor’s usual tweet sign-off, “End of tweet.”
Several of Caan’s Hollywood peers took to social media to mourn the film icon.
“So sorry to hear the news,” Rob Reiner, who directed Caan in “Misery” tweeted. “I loved working with him. And the only Jew I knew who could calf rope with the best of them. Love to the family.”
John Cusack called the star a “wonderful actor,” while Jon Lovitz added, “well this just sucks.”
Just four months ago, Caan discussed the legendary impact of 1972’s “The Godfather” with The Post, sharing, “One of the things that made ‘The Godfather’ successful, besides brilliant directing and writing and wonderful actors … was that everyone really enjoyed making it, and that comes off on the screen and I think the audience can tell that we were having a good time doing what we were doing up there.”

James Caan’s Cause of Death Revealed as a Combination of Heart Problems
James Caan died on July 6 at age 82, his family previously announced in a statement on his Twitter account
James Caan’s cause of death has been revealed.
The actor died earlier this month due to heart problems, according to a death certificate for the star that was obtained by TMZ.
Caan died from a heart attack and coronary artery disease at age 82, the document states.
The Godfather actor also suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is also known as COPD, as well as congestive heart failure.
Per his death certificate, Caan died at 9:02 p.m. local time at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles on July 6. TMZ reported that he has since been buried at Eden Memorial Park in California.

Caan’s death was initially announced through a tweet from the actor’s official Twitter account. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the statement read.
“The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the tweet added.
Caan is now survived by sons Scott, James, Jacob and Alexander, as well as daughter Tara.

A titan in the film industry, Caan’s movie and TV career stretches back over 60 years, with some of his most notable roles being in The Godfather (1972), Misery (1990) and Elf (2003).
Other notable roles throughout his career include in films like Brian’s Song (1971), Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), Rollerball (1975), Dick Tracy (1990), Bottle Rocket (1996) and Eraser (1996).
Caan was also known for appearances on television — perhaps most notably for starring as Ed Deline in the dramedy series Las Vegas, which ran for five seasons on NBC from 2003 to 2008.

Among Caan’s numerous accolades are four Golden Globe nominations, along with nods from both the Academy Awards and the Emmy Awards. He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978.
According to IMDb, Caan’s final film role will be in 2023’s Fast Charlie. The action-crime-thriller is listed as in post-production, and costars Morena Baccarin and Pierce Brosnan.
Caan was previously married four times: first to Dee Jay Mattis, from 1961 to 1966, then to Sheila Ryan in 1976.
He later married Ingrid Hajek in 1990. The two divorced in 1995, and he wed Linda Stokes later that year.
The actor filed for divorce from Stokes in 2005, but the two later reconciled. Caan and Stokes were in the middle of a divorce as of December 2016, according to TMZ.
